Aquamarine, the official birthstone for the month of March, is known for its crystal blue color and icy clarity. Perfect to represent the melting of the snow and ice and to celebrate the vibrancy of the upcoming spring.
What many people don’t know about this wonderful gem is that it belongs to the same family group as Emerald. This means that the Aquamarine has the same qualities as it’s highly sought after green cousin. Except for the fact that Emeralds tend to house a lot of inclusions where as the beauty of the Aquamarine is its clarity and transparency.
Aquamarines are fabulous gems to use in jewelry especially rings. They range high on the Moh’s scale of hardness coming in at a 7.5-8. We often suggest Aquamarine’s to our clients for their custom jewelry pieces as a nice colored stone alternative when they are looking for something soft and light but without the price tag of a diamond. Because of their light airy color Aquamarines can be paired with all colors of metal as well as a large range of other colored gemstones.
Even if you aren’t a March baby, I would highly recommend giving this gem of a gem a try for your next jewelry endeavor.
